Technology has influenced music consumption and production significantly in recent years. Social media has become increasingly relevant in promoting artists and their work, making it the subject of an emerging new artform. There are many examples of musicians who have incorporated commentary on social media culture into their songs, with British indie band The 1975 being one of the most notable examples. The band recently announced the release of their third album A Brief Enquiry Into Online Relationships (2018). In the lead up to the release of their new single ‘Give Yourself a Try’, the band’s Instagram page was flooded with promotional images that refer to modern technology and notable social media moments. A pixelated depiction of Ellen’s iconic 2014 Oscar’s award selfie is layered with bold white letters spelling ‘Soon To Be Picturesque Ruins’. Another image shows a child wearing a Virtual Reality headset with the caption ‘Modernity Has Failed Us’.The 1975 use their work to criticise the peculiar world of social media and technology, while simultaneously utilising it to promote their work. Social media has become an inescapable aspect of modern culture, leading even those who condemn it to utilise it for their commercial gain. This has established a strange symbiosis of artistic expression and social media in which artists have begun to exploit social media in the same way that they have felt exploited by it, both as musicians and as members of society.
