Walter Helbig(1878-1968)

Walter Helbig was a German and Swiss painter , graphic artist and woodcutter. He was born in Falkenstein, Saxony and moved with his father, the lawyer and mayor in Falkenstein, to Dresden in 1885 and attended secondary school there. Helbig moved to Ascona in 1924 because of the low cost of living and founded the artists' association Der Große Bär with the driving force of Marianne von Werefkin. Helbig had his first major solo exhibition in Zurich in 1948 and in 1952 became a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund.
