Qi Baishi(1864-1957)

Painter
Qi Baishi was a Chinese painter, noted for the whimsical, often playful, style of his watercolor works.

Born to a peasant family from Xiangtan, Hunan, Qi became a carpenter at 14, and learned to paint by himself at the age of 27. After he turned 40, he travelled, visiting various scenic spots in China. After 1917 he settled in Beijing.

Some of Qi's major influences include the early Qing dynasty painter Bada Shanren (Zhu Da) and the Ming dynasty artist Xu Wei. The subjects of his paintings include everyday things. In his later years, many of his works depict mice, shrimp or birds.

He was elected president of the China Artists Association in 1953, a few years before his death.

In 2017, Qi Baishi's Twelve Landscape Screens (1925) catapulted him into the '$100 Million Club' by selling for $140.8 million (931.5 million yuan) at the Poly Auctions in Beijing, China.
