Claude Monet was a French painter and founder member of the impressionists. Monet, the son of a grocer, grew up on the coast of Normandy in northern France.
In May 1883, Monet rented an old cider mill in the village of Giverny, which he later purchased and turned into his home. He greatly extended the homestead and garden, including creating lily ponds, which appear in many of his paintings.
Monet was married twice and lived to the age of 86. He is buried at Giverny church.
