Impression, Soleil Levant
Impressionism is an art movement that originated in France in the 1870s. The main characteristic of the style is the accurate depiction of light and its changing qualities, emphasising movement and the passage of time.

The impressionists often painted outdoors (in front of their subjects rather than in their studios) to quickly capture transient effects; the French call painting outdoors en plein air.

The movement’s name derives from the title of Claude Monet’s Impression, Soleil Levant (1872) (Impression, Sunrise), shown above.
