European cultural influences continued to strengthen throughout the Qajar Dynasty due to increased trade. This not only influenced artistic themes, but also artistic mediums. During the rule of Nasir al-Din in the 1840s, the camera became a new medium widely used by Qajar artists. <br><br>The Shah invited photographers from Austria, Italy and France to Tehran for lessons, so that they could learn how to use the camera effectively.<sup>1</sup> He even practiced with the camera himself and photographed women around the palace. <br><br>Iranian Artists started to mix the mediums of photography and painting. Photography even became a commonly used medium for the royal court and slowly replaced court painters for royal portraiture. Shortly after, many newspapers were established, and writers began utilising the camera to accompany their articles and record significant moments in Persian history.<br>
