In April 2018, photographer Julia Kennedy in collaboration with French designer Coline Bach attempted to unite a prevalent aspect of modern life with a leading contemporary art form: high fashion and street art. In their eight-part photography series Model Meets Mural for Nikon the camera-maker, models in vibrant designs are posed against the backdrop of some of the finest street art found in North and East London.

The series reflects Kennedy's view that fashion should not be limited to the catwalk but be present and visible in any environment. She chooses London, an iconic city for fashion and a leading source of street art, in order to reveal the “dynamism and fast-pace of busy urban life”1, while at the same time incorporating the extravagant elements of the fashion industry.

The models are purposefully dressed, incorporating elements of the street art in their dress, props and poses. The colours and textures are rich and varied, signifying the melting pot of cultures that contribute to London’s diversity. In the photoshoot at Dan Kitchener’s mural in Camden Town, the model blends into the rainy London evening depicted in the painting, which appears to melt through onto the pavement, blurring the lines between real and painted. At Daren John’s work in Tower Hamlets the sport of inner-city life: basketball, becomes the subject of a dynamic juxtaposition.

Kennedy and Bach reveal the magical point where fashion, a dominant aspect of contemporary life, can meet an equally prevalent form of art to create a harmonious whole.
